GM small car to rival Maruti Suzuki Alto

The auto majors from Tata Motors to Hyundai and General Motors to Honda Motors are now eyeing new model in the entry-level segment to rival the most selling car Alto from the Maruti Suzuki table whose worldwide sales were over 3,00,000 in 2010.

Buoyed by the huge demand for the small car market in BRIC economies like India, China, Brazil and Russia, GM has intensified its plans and in the process has collaborated with Shanghai-based SAIC Motor Corp (SAIC) to introduce entry level car to compete with Alto.

Currently, GM’s Chevrolet Spart is close competitor to Alto, which is priced higher that its rival with. Rs 3.23 lakh and Rs 4.24 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Maruti Suzuki Alto is tagged between Rs 2.31 lakh and Rs 3.27 lakh.

“We are looking at having products strategically across segments to boost sales in the Indian market. We working closely with SAIC and looking at opportunities to introduce a product priced lower than the Spark in future.” said Tim Lee, President, International Ooperations, GM during the announcement.

However, this is not going to be easy for the Detroit-based auto giant, as import costs and other duties are expected to soar the car’s prices. In order to bring down the costs and stay competitive, the company has launched a locally developed powertrain petrol engine which is set to be fitted in its popular model like Chevy Beat and other models.

The year 2011 is expected to see a huge line-up of cars in small car category with Honda’s Brio, Tata Motors and Hyundai coming up with small cars.
