After Google Inc. onslaught on Microsoft’s Cashcow – Microsoft Office, through its Online Google Docs, Big Blue is also following the suit to compete on the Cloud through its LotusLive Symphony Suite, an online office productivity suite, which enables the users to create, edit and share the documents and spreadsheets from Lotus Live via multiple locations.
With more and more users thronging on to tablets and smartphones to connect on the social platforms, online office applications are soon to become table stakes in the coming years. As iPad set the world on fire through its tablet, other players from Samsung, Motorola, Toshiba, Acer, LG and ZTE to Indian players like Adam and others are intensifying the competition to grab a pie, this will only augur well for the developers and cloud-computing industry who are coming up with new ways to store documents online, which has forced even Microsoft to go the Cloud computing way.
However, on the downside though, despite the rising popularity of online document management systems over cloud based computing, majority of users would still prefer the traditional way of storing data on their personal desktops/laptops, without ever worrying about the privacy and security issues that otherwise haunt online. So for now, there’s no threat to the old warhorse Microsoft Office from Microsoft’s table, which has been ruling for over 2 decades.
